It’s no secret there’s a lot of new infrastructure being built in New Zealand. The public sector is busy with projects such as transport and three waters, and the industrial sector with greenfield and brownfield expansion projects.
Entec’s latest initiative – Mobile Plant Rooms – is increasing the speed, safety and quality of these infrastructure roll-outs.
Quite simply, a mobile plant room is the packaging of plant into a portable enclosure.
The enclosure is built and fitted out off-site, inspected and tested, and then transported to site for rapid ‘plug-and-play’ installation and commissioning.
These are also commonly known as “E-houses”, but we prefer the term “mobile plant rooms” because there’s much more to them than just electrical plant.
In the past few years Entec has been involved in designing and manufacturing around 20 mobile plant rooms to house low-voltage MCC’s, control panels and operator desks, process plant and medium-voltage switchgear. Our client base has included water utilities, mining sites, power stations, ports, electricity networks and oil & gas operators.
Most of the mobile plant rooms we’ve built are based on ISO shipping containers, both 20 foot and 40 foot.
Several have involved two containers joined side-by-side to provide an internal width of 4.8m, which is ideal for switchgear installations where large clearances are required.
We’ve also built modular rooms from EPS sandwich panels, which provides total flexibility for dimensions.
A recent client needed two low-voltage substations on a large industrial site to power around 1,600kW of electric motors via variable speed drives.
There was an intensive and complex multi-disciplinary construction project underway, and it made sense to have the bulk of the substation work carried out off-site.
The substations were built at Entec’s yard in New Plymouth and then transported to site for installation and commissioning.
Another excellent competitive edge that Entec brings to these projects is its in-house switchboard manufacturing division, branded as TCE Controls.
TCE Controls designs and builds MCC’s (including Cubic type-tested switchboards), control panels, distribution boards and all manner of other electrical panels.
Incorporating TCE Controls panels into an Entec mobile plant room provides a single contact point for clients. It also provides reassurance that the panel and room fit-out aspects of the build are perfectly coordinated.
